Tao Te DJ Chapter 2

Under heaven all can see beauty as beauty only because there is ugliness. All can know good as good only because there is evil. Therefore having and not having arise together. Difficult and easy complement each other. Long and short contrast each other: High and low rest upon each other; Voice and sound harmonize each other; Front and back follow one another.

Translation-
In order to have a great set/performance, there must be a overall journey with little ups and downs. The feel of the Killer Track is lost if all you are playing are Killer Tracks. There is a line people use – “All Killer No Filler”. This is a good idea, but it is incomplete. You must have and play tracks that are designed to chill the heat of the dance floor. Do not buy tracks that are not really “Filler”, but select tracks that are good while they can setup little valleys in the overall composition of the set.

Tao Te DJ Chapter 1

“The Tao that can be told is not the eternal Tao. The name that can be named is not the eternal name. The nameless is the beginning of heaven and Earth. The named is the mother of the ten thousand things. Ever desireless, one can see the mystery. Ever desiring, one sees the manifestations. These two spring from the same source but differ in name; this appears as darkness. Darkness within darkness. The gate to all mystery.”

Translation –
Music is not a physical object. It is transcended into existence by creation by a human. No one feels the exact way about each track or song the same way. The different ways of experience is the mystery. The gate is the DJ who opens new avenues of emotion/feeling from each track by presenting it in a different setting or in combination with other tracks.

How has music changed my life?

How has music changed my life?

I have had music in my life as a constant from taping songs from casey kassem to I have had music in my life as a constant from taping songs from casey kassem top 40 shows all the way to when I was older borrowing my older brothers cds to record tracks I liked.

Once I got a job, almost all of my earnings were dedicated to buying music. I built up a huge library of music.
The first time I heard EDM (Electronic Dance Music) was artists like The Prodigy, The Chemical Brothers, and Crystal Method. That music totally changed my view on music.

I was still into hip hop and alternative, but this was a whole new world.
The first time I touched turntables was at a friends house who had borrowed them from a friend. By then I was into a much wider variety of EDM. I learned about breakbeats and messed around with the records that were loaned along with the tables. I was instantly hooked.

During the napster craze, I downloaded as many tracks as I could and grabbed a piece of software which is very popular now with many DJs – virtual dj.

I would sit at my computer and just try to mix the songs. The difficult part was almost all of the tracks were ripped from mix cds of dj sets. So when you started the track, the previous track was outgoing. I didn’t understand this until I got a setup of my own and bought records and tried to learn how to mix.
It took me a couple years to get good. I learned the structure of tracks very quickly just by going to clubs and being on the dance floor, but beat matching was an entirely beast.

Once I was ready I started playing at a couple clubs and lounges playing breaks. It was exhilarating, I loved playing music for people to dance to.

Fast forward 15 years and I now have 2 breakbeat podcasts :

Breakbeat Asylum by Not Applicable in iTunes Podcasts

Bring Dat Funk Back Podcast
by Not Applicable in iTunes Podcasts

I have turned into a Mobile DJ/MC due to my wife and myself’s relocation to be closer to her family. I was completely out of the club scene and did not want to start from scratch seeing as it took me years of hard work to get into in my hometown.

Now I have music playing all the time, whether it be mixing and producing myself or when I am working on other stuff, I even can’t take a shower without music. In my car all the time, sitting on the back deck in the summer hanging out with my wife having drinks.

Really the only time I am not listening to some sort of music is when I am visiting with friends and family or hanging out with my wife catching up with all our favorite tv shows and movies.

Music has changed my life completely.

Beatunes Review

Beatunes Review
I tried beatunes after trying to organize my huge library of music.  I use iTunes, but there was not a way to analyze for BPM (Beats Per Minute).
BPM is used by DJs to be able to mix two tracks together by getting the tempo the same and match the beats so when the DJ mixes over to bring the new track in, there is not a drum clash (called train wrecking).  Without beat matching, it would sound like a bunch of horses galloping away.
BeaTunes is a great program.  It can analyze your whole iTunes library adding metadata (info about the song) to each song.  It does a lot of other functions, but I really use it for removing duplicate songs and finding the BPM.
Once analyzed, beaTunes syncs with your iTunes library and keeps updating songs and metadata that you grab from beaTunes.  It is an indispensable tool for our workflow when organizing music and getting a handle of new tracks as they are added.
You can check out beaTunes here.
